I don't know if anyone is familiar with the speech Jimmy Carter made in 1979, formally titled "A Crisis of Confidence" and commonly known as the "Malaise" speech, but a lot of it is about the energy crisis, and could apply just as well to today. I wonder what the world would be like today if we'd properly followed his lead, then.

Unfortunately, people don't like to be told to eat their vegetables. :(

This is why I'm less concerned with STOPPING global warming than I am with figuring out how to deal with the consequences. I simply can't imagine the entire world showing enough foresight to not use every drop of oil and every lump of coal we can reach over the next several decades.

Peak oil (and peak coal) are going to come down on the 21st century long before we get the gumption to do anything about the environmental consequences of burning all that crap. I'm just hoping we aren't looking at gigadeaths from famine and war once the cheap transportation energy runs out.
