Making the internet real

I had my first web design class tonight. It was just an overview of the upcoming classes, to summarize the elements of web design and web development and how they fit together, but it was exciting and interesting.

I never learned much about making web pages. I know a few minor tidbits of HTML (mostly just what's useful to LJ!), have reformatted graphics for the web, and I've "created" a few sites with content management programs like .mac homepage. But the internet was always kind of a mysterious la-la land that was all made out of code in some mysterious way. Whereas the print files I work with all had direct relation to potential ink on paper, and I knew how to manipulate them so they would print well.

During the overview I developed a sense that with what I am about to learn, the internet will become real to me. Tangible. It's still virtual, still all made of code that in turn is made of ones and zeros, but I will know how the code creates this magical realm, and how to manipulate it! That is very exciting.
