When OS X breaks Java apps

This is partially for my own future reference, and partially in case someone having a similar problem needs to Google it up:

There is some kind of battle going on between Apple and Java, and all I really know about it is that whenever there is a OS X Software Update involving Java, I lose functionality in my Java-based imposition and platemaking app at work.

I thought it had completely uninstalled the older versions of Java this time, but I did some digging and found they had gone to:

System\Library\Frameworks\JavaVM.framework\Versions\disabled

So I dragged them back into System\Library\Frameworks\JavaVM.framework\Versions

and then went to Java Preferences and dragged the compatible versions back to the top (I've heard there are better ways to manage what Java modules are used on an applicatino-specific basis, but this works for me so far).

And my app worked again, yay! (Now I need to do this on the other computers that use this app).

What sort of breakage? JDK upgrades occasionally add quirks, but stuff usually doesn't break hard.

It is pretty weird. The program still works, but we lose the latest upgrade, a new mode that makes things a little easier and more flexible. If I try to click on that tab I get blank space. So I can't use that mode, or access all the projects I've done using the new mode.

It could well be the fault of the people who make the app as well as of Apple (some kind of sloppy coding?) But theree's not much I can do. They know this is happening, and so far their only solution is "use these Java modules and it will work".

That actually makes sense -- something they're using to build that cool new mode depends on something that changed behavior. You should totally tell them they need to fix it :-/

A reminder might be in order, however, they totally know this is happening as the first few times we talked to tech support about it. Now I just poke around and fix it.
