ramble about digital music

I finally did preliminary sorting of my digital music tonight. Since the laptop hard drive death last summer, I haven't had much music on my laptop. Because it wouldn't all fit, and I'd lost my record of what made the cut. So I had to sort it again. Damn, its hard paring down to the essentials. I selected the stuff to go on there, then I had to eliminate more cause it still wouldn't fit. I set a limit of half the (80 gig) hard drive filled with music. I'm going to need to pare it down more though, or I'll run out of free space. Actually that shouldn't be hard, though it will take time- I know I've got some duplicate stuff.

Next I need to select music for the iPod shuffle. I want to take it to the gym.

I need to go to the gym. Someone brought a five-pound Pearson's nut roll into work today. Between that and white chocolate candy cane Hershey's kisses, not to mention all the cookies that keep turning up everywhere, its good my parents got us Y membership for Xmas.

Sounds like someone needs a big external hard drive for all of her music.

That's actually the main reason I still have my desktop PC. There's a massive hard drive in this thing just for my music. I want to fill it. But there's a long way to go.

No, I have all the extra music on my external hard drive that I use for backups. But I still needed to choose what goes on the laptop (though I can always edit that).

My digital Doors music has been mysteriously wiped out, except what I had on my iPod. Or I just somehow missed it and its on the backup drive. If not, I'll just have to reimport the CDs. The laptop must not go without LA Woman.

If you've accidently lost that, I have a few Doors CDs I can lend to you.

No, I've got a massive Doors collection. I got that nifty box set from my dad for Christmas several years ago. I just didn't find the digital files. I might have to reimport the CDs, but I'll check the backup drive again first.

You don't have the Led Zeppelin box set, by any chance, do you? I had it on cassette tape. It was probably the last thing I received on cassette before getting a CD player.

For Zeppelin, I've got IV and Best of Volumes 1 and 2.

I have IV, but I don't have that "Best Of". I'll trade for "Physical Graffiti", or whatever else you'd like to raid from my archives.

Sure . . . I'd guess you probably have a good Dead collection. I lost some of my favorites when my hard drive crashed, since I'd bought 'em from iTunes and they don't let you re-download, the bastards, which surprised me. I have Workingman's Dead on vinyl, and American Beauty on cassette, but i no longer have them in digital form.

I have American Beauty on CD, as well as a couple of live shows, and a few other interesting gems. I think you'd like my Dead selection.

I think their DRM is going to kill them in the end. I don't know if you heard the story this week about how their profits are slipping at iTunes, but that's a big part of it. I think your best bet with iTunes music is to burn it to CD as soon as you download it. That's a pain, and nobody does it, but it's a smart thing to do.

I back up my music now, but I really had no idea you couldn't download something you purchased for a secong time. I bought some used CDs for around the price of albums on iTunes, and the CDs are still there!

I know. I don't use their music store for just that reason. If there's something I want, Cheapo isn't far away, or expensive. And my friends have good music, I like to do CD exchanges like this. I sold a stack of CDs there the other day. I probably shouldn't have bothered but it was stuff I didn't care about, mostly the Ex's old crap that she didn't bother to take: Fastball, Counting Crows, New Radicals - garbage like that. They wouldn't even take the Offspring. $2.55 for about a dozen CDs, quarters and dimes each. I could use them for trap shooting for that price. Actually, I should have. Especially the frelling Counting Crows.

Let's get together one night next week over here at my place, since you use a laptop and I use the desktop machine, and we can rip each other's CDs.
