Socially UnAcceptable???!???

I was surprised to find that even within the community bras_suck, there's question over whether it's socially acceptable to go braless. So I made this poll, though I doubt I'll get responders representative of the general population.

Poll #1106252 Socially UnAcceptable???!???

Is it socially acceptable for a woman to go out in public without a bra on, so long as her shirt isn't see-thru or something?

Yes, she can go braless.
No, she should put on a bra.
It's okay only for informal situations.
It might not be socially acceptable, but we should fight to make it so.
What would I know about that? I'm oblivious!

The problem is, saying "yes she can" isn't the same thing as saying "there will be no problem if she does". That would just be wishful thinking.

It depends a lot on the shrit for me. Then again i've been wearing sports bras a lot because I've started jogging and i also have gender problems.

Nobody should be forced to wear bras if they don't want to. I personally HATE wearing them, some days. But I also know that my clothes look better if I wear one because I am heavy and the girls are not as high and firm as they used to be. I'd personally rather suffer the underwire than look dumpy.

on an unrelated note, since you deleted the post I should actually be responding to you in
"Did you just delete all the comments to this post??"

No, I have not deleted any comments or edited my posts at all. I posted the poll to both my own journal and to the bras_suck community. The "Discuss results" link takes you to my journal post rather than the community post, presumably since I posted the poll there first.

So, it appears that you deleted my post in bras_suck since you thought I was deleting comments, which I wasn't. Had I been given the chance, I would have edited my post to explain what was happening, which was not intentional.

I don't know what you mean about "THIS community", since you wrote that in my journal. I haven't seen those comments you say I deleted from the community post, and, since it was my post in the community, I should have gotten e-mail notifications. More likely, people thought they were posting to the community post but were actually posting to my journal post, for reasons I explained above. I am sorry about the confusion, it is apparently a weird quirk of polls posted in two places. Please read the comments on THIS journal entry, and I expect you will see the comments you think I deleted from the community post.

What were the comments? I never saw them. I did not delete them. My best theory is that they are actually in this post for the reason mentioned above (otherwise LJ is doing something even screwier, and I would like to hear what they were and work with you to figure out why they didn't come through. Do you have lj-notifications of them? Has anyone else seen them?). The only comment I was notified of on the community post was the one where you asked me if I deleted posts.

Sorry, I don't know how your moderator settings work. I'm just trying to figure out what is up with comments that I never got notifications on but you claim were there and I deleted them. My best guess is that you were looking at this post in my journal and thought it was the community post, for reasons mentioned above.

My response to your post on the new don't delete comments rule:
"I say YAY! to that rule because it means you cannot delete the comment I make in which I explain that I did not delete anyone's comments, you deleted my post because you thought I had!"

Your response to me:
"I have no intention of deleting anyone's comments. I still think you deleted those comments because there is no other explanation for how or why they disappeared. I don't know why you keep repeating this crap about comments in your journal because those are not the comments I am talking about."

I did not delete any comments on my post in bras_suck. I did not see any comments, or get LJ-notifications on them. You are claiming this while presenting no evidence or corroboration, and then you deleted my post before I had any chance to respond, and then you delete the comments I made on your post about the rule (or freezed comments which amounted to the same thing). It's your community, and you are not required to in any official way, but it's still a shitty way to run things.

I'm just upset that you deleted my post because you thought I did something I didn't do, especially since it's so hypocritical (or very "eye for an eye" I suppose) to delete a post because you think I deleted comments in it. And you appear to have barred me from posting in the community (as well as deleting my comments in the "don't delete comments post - more hypocrisy!). I don't care about you proving anything to me, I would rather you admit that those comments you thought I deleted might not have existed (or existed in my journal, not in the community post) and that you might be wrong. And I'd like to put the poll back in the community, because I thought it was useful. I understand you are unlikely to do these things. I don't think you really listened to what I said originally or bothered to check in my journal for those mythical comments you thought were in the community post.

Anyhow, feel free to let this go at any point, but if you keep arguing this I will probably keep arguing it too.

I did not delete any comments and that is why I am upset over everything you have done, because I consider you deleting a whole post for an imagined offense just as bad or worse as deleting comments in a community post, which is something I would not do. I know you do not believe me, but it is true. If those comments existed, I have not seen them and don't know what happened to them, as I've said. The way the poll directed comments to my journal seemed to me like an obvious explanation or your confusion. And the simplest explanation is often the truth. But if it is not, either way I didn't delete anything.

As for the other stuff, I've been keeping this between you and me and not contacting anyone else from bras_suck about it (some of them voted in my poll and commented in my journal, though not many since you deleted the community post so fast!). I'm not trying to start drama in your community. But so long as you have kept bickering with me and taken action against me I have kept bickering with you, because I'm stubborn like that, especially when unjustly accused.

Jeebus, what an aptly named journal. "I'm going to follow you in your journal to accuse you of deleting comments, even though I can't offer ANYTHING remotely akin to proof, accuse you of being a troll while in fact I am the troll, delete your community post and block you from posting, and in general be an obstinate, repetitive, and not at all internally consistent pain in the ass."

This, my friends, is what torches are for, because as we all know trolls regenerate unless your burn them into indeterminate chunks of smoldering combustion by-products.

Re: this again?
Perhaps the liberal communities I've lived in most of my life are skewed from the rest of the population, but I've never gotten the impression that it was generally socially unacceptable to not wear a bra. I understand that there are social circles that disagree with this, but I would assume their number and power have been lessening ever since the 60's bra-burnings. I don't know how common they are at this point, hence the poll.

Coming from a family full of large breasted women, it was quite looked down on to go in public without a bra. I think the idea was that going without one drew even more attention (generally of the negative/lewd variety) to something that already got plenty of attention on its own.

Well, real_live_troll eventually deleted all her bits of conversation with me, after deleting my post to her community because she erroneously thought I'd deleted the comments to it. She also deleted my comments to her post to the community about a new "no deleting comments" rule. I haven't deleted anything. It's all her. It's all quite amusing and ironic.

I could recreate the whole exchange from my lj-notification e-mails, if anyone actually cares.

I think any use of the term "socially acceptable" is trying to tell other people how they should feel, which will be ultimately fruitless.

ah, I see Sam wrote the same thing, and better than I did.
