Obligatory New Year's post

Happy New Year. I am happy. 2005 was a good year for me, for the most part. I hope to have another good year in 2006.

Last Book Read: Currently rereading "The Book of Ash" by Mary Gentle. (4 volumes, actually, but really one book, like LOTR) Alternate-history fantasy novel about a woman who is a mercenary captian in the 1470s. One of my faves. Last new book read was probably "A Shortcut in Time" by Charles Dickinson. Also read the first few essays in "The Crazy Years" by Spider Robinson, one of my lovely Christmas present books. Um, I read a lot.

Last Live Music Show Seen: Haven't gotten out to a lot of shows lately. There was a guy playing guitar in the cafe where we ate New Year's Eve brunch. I saw some friends play shows (floydcollins and perruche_verte) and heard some very good guitar playing at a party awhile ago. Aside from that, I saw Cake, M. Doughty and Boiled in Lead, all awhile ago.

Last CD Purchased: Well, I've gotten CDs from the library and put them into iTunes, and bought the occasional song online (most recent are Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes" and Judas Priest's "Diamonds and Rust", respectively). The last actual CD I bought was David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough". But all of these are things I had on tape or vinyl but craved in digital form. The last new music I bought were Leonard Cohen's songs "I'm Your Man" and "Everybody Knows".

Last Thing Cooked: Garlic Gorgonzola ravioli with sauce of fresh tomato, spinach and portobello mushroom. Though I also collaborated on pizzas at Ben and Elaine's annual pizza-making New Year's Eve Party.

Last New Thing Eaten: Pho (vietnamese beef noodle soup) at Pho 79. Yum. Also tried basil-seed drink there, which I expected to be something like basil tea, which I like, but it was more like a horrible flavor of bubble tea with basil seeds in the bubbles.

Last Thing Bought: champagne for New Year's, groceries.

Last Piece of Clothing Bought or Received as a Gift: Fuzzy green scarf that matches the paint and curtains in my bedroom, from Ben and Elaine. Before that, purple flouncy velvet skirt and purple silk blouse from Mom.

Last Embarrassing Experience: Several people discussing the cute noises I make when I orgasm (at Gregg and Charlie's party). Much more recently, I fell down some icy steps on the way to the New Year's Party, but I'm not that easily embarassed anymore.

Last Totally New Experience: Getting fucked by a gorgeous angelic-looking little blond woman with a big black strap on dildo, in front of an audience (again at G and C's party).

Last Foreign Country Visited, if any: England. Gosh, it's been awhile, now.

Last Theatrical Production Seen: I think it was called "Three Drinks" or something, a awesome and insane modern dance performance at the Bryant-Lake Bowl.

Last thing seen on a TV screen: There was an Atari at the new Year's party, on which people were constantly playing old games. A detour to 1982 on the way to 2005. It was strangely mesmerizing to all present.

Last Big Achievement: Getting people used to the changed state of my relationship with Matt.

Last thing I did in 2005: We left the party early because Sam had to work in the morning. We were having sex when we heard the fireworks for the New Year. Afterwards we curled up together and went to sleep. Very happy.

That was a new way to start the New Year. Most recent years I've started the New Year standing around with friends, toasting with champagne, and kissing. In 2001, Tom and I had New Year's at home, cooked steak, played the theme song for the movie 2001 at midnight, and watched the whole Man with No Name trilogy. (Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.) One year when I was a kid, my sister and I snuck out to an animation film festival while my parents were out at a party.

oh, that basil seed drink is putrid! I love the beef broth at Pho 79 though, I think I stasted star anise in it or something. Do try Cheng Heng if you ever get over to University Ave in St Paul. I recommend the mussels in black bean and ginge sauce. Its a sexy dish so take a sweetheart. :D

I remember you mentioning Cheng Heng to perruche_verte somewhere in LJ previously. Did you ever get a chance to take him there? Perhaps we should all go sometime.

We did go there once. I had their Tom Yum, presumably the Khmer version. It was Tom Yummy.

I tried a can of the basil seed drink once. It's... weird. I thought it tasted good, but the texture put me off a bit.

I wonder if it was the same substance. This came in a glass, though it could have originated in a can.

I seem to recall someone offering to take me out for a bowl of pho a while back. Is there such thing as vegetarian pho? Because I'm still holding you to it.

Pho being a beef broth with noodles and beef, there is no such thing as vegetarian pho. There might be similar vegetarian noodle soups, but you won't find them at all pho restaurants.

Happy New Year
I hope that in 2006 you continue to build on the exciting experiences and benefit from the lessons won during the previous year. I also hope that we get to meet in person. I'm thinking that I might have to have a party for all the Aquarius/February/Pieces birthday people that I seem to find myself surrounded by. I'm not sure it will be as exciting as one of Charlie and Gregg's parties but we can try.

Re: Happy New Year
This year my birthday (Feb 28) will not only be my golden birthday (28 yrs old) but is on Mardi Gras! I've gotta have some sort or party. The dilemma is, it probably doesn't make sense to have it on the actual day, since it is of course a Tuesday, which kind of dulls the excitement of the coincidence of dates.

Yes, we should meet in person sometime.

Re: Happy New Year
I actually threw a party on Mardi Gras last year so I can say that Tuesday is not the best day for a party but we just made it an earlier night and it was a lot of fun. I do still have all the decorations and a ton of beads. My Birthday is February 4th which is a Saturday but my kids are with me that weekend so they will be pretty much running my world on that day. I'm actually thinking February 11th would be a good day.
