Stadium crap

They're talking about stadiums again in the State Legislature, and on MPR. The latest is a plan that increases sales tax in Hennepin County, without asking the taxpayers first.

Even though (or perhaps because) I'm not overburdened with money, my opinion on taxes has always been, TAX THE HELL OUT OF ME - if you're going to do something useful to society with it. So I'm pretty un-pleased about taxes lately - I don't think they're being used very well overall. If they were raising the sales tax to build more affordable housing, improve public transit, or ensure that everyone can get health insurance, I'd sing hallelujahs, even though I'd question that that was the best method to accomplish it. Sales tax is a tax that effects the poor more than the rich, as they have little choice but to spend a larger percentage of their income. They should really come up with a stadium plan that pays for the stadium only from those who use it. I suppose they don't because they can't make enough money that way.

Stadium, not worthwhile? P'shaw! I want a pony! Why can't the county buy me a pony?

That's the thing - the county could buy a pony for everyone who wants one, and they'd still be money ahead. Plus, ponies are more practical than stadiums. You can get some real work done with a horse. Try getting a stadium to plow your garden or to pull your cart. That's right - it won't.

Besides, I want a retractable roof over my office. I don't even have a window right now, and I work for an OUTDOOR television production company. Irony? You betcha! I never see outside! My boss isn't a billionare, why should he be expected to pay for such renovations? Pohlad can pony up the dough if he wants to. And that's another thing ponies can do that stadiums can't.

This would have been a good opportunity to call or email in with my resolution for SD65 convention, even though it didn't pass, it could still make waves.

OOH! They're building free stadiums for people? Can I have one?
