all gone

The hardrive in my laptop is kaput. It won't spin up to get data off it. So if I want to get anything off it I have to spring for the serious data recovery services. On the one hand, I feel like my life is on that laptop. On the other hand, how much of it is really irreplaceable or important, and how much of this is just my difficulty in letting go of things? There are odds and ends that are backed up, but a lot of stuff is just lost.

Oh honey, I'm sorry. I know you kept a lot of interesting things on there.

All that measuring and sketching I did for arranging our new place is gone . . . though the earlier versions I e-mailed to you, you should still have.

Yes, I do. We just don't have the furniture dimensions anymore, though I think we had reached a pretty good state of planning where the bigger things will go.

Oh, crap! That's horrible!

Will it spin up once in a while? Maybe you can get it to spin, and use Norton Utilities to transfer your data off?

It was working yesterday morning (though noisily) but now its not. Matt will try a few tricks (shaking it, heating it up) but its probably toast.

There's almost always a way to recover data. I'm sure Matt will get it back.

Well, eventually it will get to the point where the only way to recover it is to send it somewhere expensive, and in that case, I'll probably just give up on it.

so sorry to hear :(

I like to make backups, and periodically wipe everything and start over.

That is absolutely one of the hardest dilemmas you can face when it comes to data. How much is your life really worth? I have gigs of graphics work I've done, and I keep multiple backups, but if I lost it, would it really matter? Would all the sappy emails I've written to my SO's be a huge loss? All my music... Bleh I don't want to think about it! I've had this happen to me twice so far in my long string of machines. Started from scratch every time, but now its multiple backups for me. Just got an external 160G drive. Unless karma was really out to get me, I doubt my internal and external would die at the same time. *looks around for sneaky karma*

My graphics work is mostly on the server at work.

My music is mostly still around as CDs and on Matt's computer.

But not all of it. And there are so many other little things. But not enough to put a thousand-dollar pricetag on it.
